The peninsula Eiderstedt chose the lighthouse on Westerheversand as their landmark,

It is known from advertisement flyers and posters.

We present it from a total different side.

Before the lighthouse was built in 1906, one tried to get the land from the owners of Westerhever, but they were too stubborn. Well, there was nothing to be done other, than to build the tower in the mud on fiscal property. 127 stakes have been piled nearly 8m deep into the ground to sustain the foundation so that the landmark wouldn't sink. The then master builders heaped up a 6m high mound.

The lighthouse's fire flashes in 41,5m height. It can be seen for 22 sea miles, which means, the signal can be seen from nearly 40km away, even on Helgoland if the weather is right. The lighthouse's day marking is red-white. At night the flashes can be seen, an automatic time control switches the flashes on.

The lighthouse can be reached in around 20 minutes by foot from the dike Westerhever over a well-constructed path. To make the walk back a bit more interesting, a so-called Stockensteig (narrow stick path) is there, which has been under protection for years.
